During the US Civil War, Somers Wharf was headquarters for the office of the US Consul General Charles Maxwell Allen, and its docksides saw spies, sailors and speedy Southern blockade-runners which played cat-and-mouse with Yankee gunboats.Bermuda was an important waystation for Confederate supplies, which the Union tried to blockade. Consul Allen had a tough time in Bermuda, which mostly sided with the rebels.
